M.D./M.B.A. Degree Program
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine/Carey Business School
Curriculum Overview
The curriculum of the M.D./M.B.A. program reflects the requirements and content of two degree programs: the Medical School Genes to Society curriculum and the Johns Hopkins MBA curriculum. Both are innovative new approaches to education in their respective fields.
The typical M.D./M.B.A. candidate is expected to follow the sample schedule, outlined below.
Application Process
Students applying to the M.D./M.B.A. program will be required to meet the admissions criteria of the JHU School of Medicine and be admitted to the M.D. program. If the students are accepted by the SOM, their application will be forwarded to the MBA Admissions Office for review by the business school. The M.D./M.B.A. Academic Program Committee will approve the final candidates for the dual- degree program. Admitted students will receive admission to the School of Medicine and the Business School for the dual-degree program. Applicants are required to have an MCAT score, however, the GMAT is NOT required.
Pathways
This dual degree program is designed with two basic pathways. Each requires a slightly different process:
Pathway 1
Students that identify during the application process as interested in this dual degree would begin their first year at Johns Hopkins with the Carey M.B.A. and then start their M.D. degree in year two of the five year program. These students will apply to SOM for the Regular M.D. program and will select the Combined Medical Degree/Graduate Program designation on the AMCAS application and the Dual M.D./M.B.A. on the Hopkins secondary application. SOM will first make its own admissions decision on the applicant for the M.D. program.
Students who are admitted to the Regular M.D. program and have expressed an interest in the Dual M.D./M.B.A. program will then be considered by Carey. Applicants must comply with each of the Party’s stated admission requirements for the Program. Applications and supporting documents will be shared between the Parties. SOM will retain the application fee. The admissions committees for each school will make their own independent admissions decision. Decision letters will be sent from each division.
Pathway 2
We recognize that some students may not decide to enter the dual degree program until after they have matriculated within the SOM. Students who wish to matriculate into the M.D. program and then to do their M.B.A. work between years 2-3 of the M..D can apply to this dual degree program by December 31 of their second year. They will first notify their SOM advisor and will be referred to the Carey school to complete their application for admission and will be evaluated for admission by the Carey admissions committee. Although these students would do the M.B.A. work between the 2nd-3rd years of the M.D. program, they will need to do a scholarly concentration that can apply to the dual degree. Thus the scholarly concentration would normally be business oriented.
Degree Requirements and Completion
Students in the dual-degree program must complete all of the degree requirements at both schools before they receive their M.D. and M.B.A. diplomas.
For the Carey M.B.A. program, the students are required to complete 54 credits of the M.B.A. program. Up to 12 credits from the M.D. electives can be applied to their requirements for the M.B.A. electives, subject to review and approval of the M.D./ M.B.A. Academic Program Committee.

Tuition & Financial Aid
Billing and financial aid assistance will be managed separately by each institution. M.D./M.B.A. students will pay full tuition and fees at the school they are registered each semester. All billing costs charged to the student through Carey Business School must be satisfied before student will receive any financial aid funding through School of Medicine.
Students may apply for financial aid assistance through both schools. However, funding will only be provided through the school for which the student is currently matriculating. Financial aid from one school may not be used to cover costs for the other.
